What Is Shipt?

Shipt is a grocery delivery and pick-up service that can be accessed via their website and mobile app. Currently, Shipt operates in more than 50 million U.S. households in more than 270 metros nationwide and continues to expand.

As a Shipt shopper, your job would be to accept orders to shop for, bag, and deliver groceries.

To become a Shipt shopper, you must meet the following basic requirements:

  • Be 18+ years of age
  • Have a valid U.S. driver’s license and auto insurance.
  • Have a reliable vehicle (1997 or newer).
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.

Setting Your Schedule

As with any delivery side-hustle app, you get to set your schedule. This provides more flexibility for your time and life. If you need a side-hustle where you can work when it’s most convenient for you, becoming a Shipt shopper is an excellent option for that. You also get to pick what specific location zones you would like to shop and deliver in.

Potential For High Pay

Considering this is supposed to be a side-hustle, Shipt pays a pretty penny for grocery shopping. According to the Shipt website, Shipt shoppers can expect to make about $15 to $25 per hour.

Additionally, the pay structure is straightforward. You get a base pay of $5 per order plus a 7.5% commission on the order amount. Therefore, if you get an expensive order, this would result in a high payout.

Another aspect of the Shipt pay that adds to the potential for high compensation is the “promo” offers. Shipt has several “promo” offers for which they will pay you more to complete. If you want to make as much money as possible, try to accept as many promos as possible.

Lastly, you also have the opportunity to make tips! Many Shipt customers are either disabled, elderly, or busy parents. Therefore, the customers tend to be extremely grateful for their Shipt shoppers and tip them well.

Also, in the beginning, you will be on a trial period where you can only accept one order per hour slot that you work, but as you become more active, you will gain access to do multiple orders at once. Being able to do multiple orders at once will make your grocery shopping a lot more efficient and allow you to make more money!

Fast Pay

Unlike working a regular job that pays you every two weeks, Shipt pays you weekly, every Friday. For those of you looking to get your money sooner than later, Shipt has got you covered.

Lower Drive Time

One of the significant benefits of becoming a Shipt shopper is that most of your time spent on the job will be doing the actual grocery shopping. Unlike working for a company like Uber or Postmates, where you will be doing a lot of driving, you can keep your drive time minimal and stay within your area with Shipt. Less driving means less money spent on gas and wear and tear on your car.

Shipt Shopper Cons

Now that you know the benefits of becoming a Shipt shopper, you will want to know the cons to help you make an informed decision.

No Instant Cash Out

Unlike other delivery/driving apps, Shipt does not have an “instant cashout” option. While yes, you do get paid weekly, which is sooner than every two weeks, some apps allow you to cash out at any point in time.

The Application

While the application itself is easy to use, one aspect that is lacking is communication with the customer. Other apps allow you to keep all interactions on the app. With Shipt, if you have to do any substitutions, you will have to text the customer from your phone number. For those who sincerely value their privacy, this might not be the best option.

Slightly Higher Barrier To Entry

Unlike other driving/delivering apps, Shipt makes things a bit more complicated during the application process. The video interview may be a deterrent to some, and this part of the process makes it more challenging to be a Shipt shopper than becoming a shopper for an app like Instacart.

Hard To Drop A Delivery

When working for Shipt, it is more difficult to drop a delivery than with other apps. Instead of being able to cancel an order for it to be rerouted to another shopper, the app will not let you cancel unless you contact headquarters, first. This takes away from some of the convenience of a side-hustle like this.

Are There Apps Better Than Shipt?

If you want an app better than Shipt, you should give Instacart a go. Instacart is known to pay more, and they also compensate you for your mileage, unlike Shipt. Additionally, Instacart also has an instant payout option, and they let you know what your tips will be ahead of time. Shipt won’t show you your tips until after you complete your order. Not being able to see your full payment ahead of time makes it harder to make an informed decision about whether you should accept an order.

Another thing to consider is that Shipt has less versatility than Instacart. Instacart has two positions available: in-store shopper and full-service shopper. So for those of you who do not have a car and still want to be able to make money grocery shopping, you may want to go with becoming an in-store shopper for Instacart instead.

Instacart also doesn’t make you text customers about orders through your phone. Everything is done through the app.

Overall, Instacart is better than Shipt, but Shipt shoppers can still make a lot of money. Instacart tends to be overly saturated, which means there is more competition between shoppers to get orders. If you want to have access to more potential orders, become a shopper for both.

Finally, if you don’t want to grocery shop, and instead would rather make money delivering food or driving passengers around, you can try one of the following:

Is Shipt Worth It?

There are many easy side hustles out there, and Shipt fits that bill as well. Although Shipt might not be the leading grocery delivery app, you can still make a nice chunk of change working as a Shipt shopper. Additionally, the ability to set your hours is appealing. You also don’t have to put a ton of wear and tear on your car to get the job done!

Remember, if you get large orders and get tipped well, you can make up to $25 an hour!

Shipt is worth it because of how much money you can make doing something that you’re already doing on a weekly or bi-weekly basis (grocery shopping).

Wrapping Up: Being A Shipt Shopper

Being a Shipt shopper is a viable side-hustle that has high pay and flexible hours. It is an excellent opportunity for those who like to shop for groceries to help out their local community and make good money while doing so.

However, if you value your privacy and don’t want to text customers with your phone number, you should consider Instacart, instead. You should also consider Instacart if having an instant cashout option is important to you.

With that said, though, you could also be a shopper for both to increase your order requests and have more choice in what orders you accept for what pay. Depending on your location, Shipt may also be busier than Instacart, so give being a Shipt shopper a shot!
