How Does TaskRabbit work?

From setting up IKEA furniture to installing a flat screen television, TaskRabbit connects people in need of miscellaneous household services with the people in their area who can give them.

There are more than 50 categories to choose from, and lest you think TaskRabbit is only for guys with muscles, you’d probably be pleasantly surprised to see such gigs as ironing and baby-proofing on the list. (It’s amazing what people will pay for.)

In fact, not all gigs available on TaskRabbit are physical services at all. Some jobs are even digital such as social media posting, data entry, marketing, and other computer-related tasks.

After the start of the COVID 19 pandemic, a variety of contactless tasks were added to the site as well for those who wish to avoid contact with another person.

Even so, the most popular services on TaskRabbit still continue to be laborious household services like gardening, furniture installation, cleaning, hanging pictures, mounting TVs, packing and moving.

About Task Rabbit

Is TaskRabbit Legitimate?

TaskRabbit is a legitimate website and app created in 2008 and actually owned by The IKEA group (yes, that IKEA). Over 60,000 contract workers use the TaskRabbit platform across dozens of different cities.  Tasking can be a very lucrative way to earn some extra cash and many people have even found enough success on the platform to make it their full-time job.

All Taskers are background-checked and both parties are protected under the TaskRabbit Happiness Pledge. The TaskRabbit Happiness Pledge covers clients for up to $10,000 of property damage, bodily injury or theft. In addition, the TaskRabbit customer support team can be reached 7 days a week online or by phone. (The customer service phone number for customers in the United States is 844-340-8275)

There are many benefits to using a company like TaskRabbit. Rather than try to find clients on your own, TaskRabbit takes on the task of client management so you can easily find users who are hiring all in one place. The platform also lists verified customer reviews on each worker’s profile, which brings an extra peace of mind to those doing the hiring.

How Much Money Can You Make On TaskRabbit?

As with any platform in the gig economy, how much money you can make on TaskRabbit is dependent on how much you work. It is certainly possible to make a large income on TaskRabbit and even quit your full-time job to earn a living on TaskRabbit.

Since you set your own hourly rate and decide what skills to offer, which jobs you accept, how many hours you are available, and what niches you want to work in – the opportunities are there for you to work (and earn) as much or as little as you would like.

The average hourly rate for a new Tasker hovers around $15-20 per hour, while seasoned Taskers with 5 stars can easily charge upwards of $50 an hour for those same chores. The more positive ratings you have, the more money you can earn. In fact, there are many full-time Taskers earning a whopping $2,000 per week!

Keep in mind that TaskRabbit will take out a certain percentage as a service fee, and you will also need to take taxes into consideration when figuring out your target hourly rate.

Tips are also an option on TaskRabbit, which can be a very lucrative way to rake in the cash. Luckily, TaskRabbit only takes their share out of your main invoice, so 100% of all tips you receive are yours to keep.

Working in Task Rabbit

It’s also important to note what is not required to work for TaskRabbit. You do not need to have any special skills, experience, education or even your own car. This gives TaskRabbit a huge advantage over most other gig economy services like Uber or Instacart which can be harder for people without a reliable vehicle to get into. As a Tasker, if you’re helping someone pack for their upcoming move, they don’t care how you get there as long as you do the job right.

TaskRabbit Sign Up Process

It is completely free to download the Tasker app and create an account online or via your mobile device. From the web, you can visit https://www.taskrabbit.com/become-a-tasker or you can click on “Become A Tasker” in the app to get started. If you sign up via the website, it will eventually prompt you to download the app to finish your registration process.

Next, you will build your profile and select which services and skills you would like to offer. At this time, you will enter your personal information including your address, phone number, social security number, and email address. You will also need to upload a clear headshot to use as your profile photo.

Note: Some large cities like New York City or San Francisco require a fee of $25 at this point to get started.

Once this is complete, the next step in the process is to await your completed background check and identity verification. TaskRabbit runs a third-party identity verification service to run your ID check. You will need to upload a photo of your ID and a selfie in order to become verified. This step usually takes about 4 business days.

Once your email address has been registered and your application has been accepted, you can set your weekly availability, your starting rates, and your desired work areas. You can also choose to opt-in to “same day” jobs or leave that designation unchecked if you prefer more advanced notice for each task.

After these steps have been completed and your profile is completely filled out, you will begin to show up in client search results on the website and app. Just sit back and wait to get hired!

How Do You Get Paid On TaskRabbit?

As mentioned previously in this article, you will need a valid U.S. bank account from a financial institution in order to get paid from TaskRabbit. Each client’s credit card is charged after the task has been successfully completed. Direct deposit payments are usually made within a few business days of each completed task.

A 15% TaskRabbit service fee will automatically be taken from each of your invoices (the client also gets hit with a separate 15% fee on their bill).

How Can You Become An “Elite Tasker”?

The coveted Elite Tasker designation leads to better client visibility, more job opportunities, and allows you to charge higher rates for your work. Workers can earn the Elite Tasker badge by:

  • Maintaining a positive rating of 98% or above
  • Completing a high number of jobs each month
  • Keeping a clear record with no violations of TaskRabbit’s Marketplace Guidelines

Once you have achieved Elite Tasker status, your higher rating will push you to the top of search results, allowing you to be seen by more clients and get hired for more jobs.

Does TaskRabbit Report To The IRS?

When you sign up with a platform such as TaskRabbit, you are legally classified as an independent contractor. This means you are not an employee and will not receive a W-2 form as with a regular employer. Instead, independent contractors typically file a Schedule C with their taxes.

TaskRabbit reports any annual earnings over $20,000 using a Form 1099-K. Taskers will still need to report all income received from tasks on the platform, even if you are not issued a 1099.

Like with any small business, you may be able to deduct any expenses you accumulated while running tasks for your clients. It is also wise to set some money aside from each job in order to account for your tax bill in April. If you aren’t used to filing self-employment taxes, you may want to consider consulting with an accountant if you need help come tax season.

Pros And Cons Of Working For TaskRabbit

As with any app or platform you may try for your side hustle, there are some pros and cons to working as a Tasker on TaskRabbit. Below are some of the real-life perks and bummers to keep in mind.

TaskRabbit Functions

Pro: Make Your Own Hours

The freedom and flexibility to make your own hours is the main reason most people go on the hunt for side gigs in the first place. Some gig economy apps require you to log in and wait during certain times of the day and many don’t even allow you to pick your shifts. This is not the case with TaskRabbit. Taskers can set their own availability and only need to work when contacted and hired by clients. When you freelance with TaskRabbit, there is no one standing over you making sure you clock in at certain times. Work life balance for the win!

Pro: Set Your Own Pricing

This is another great perk of working for TaskRabbit. On the platform you can set your own rates for your services. If you don’t want to get out of bed for more than $100, you don’t have to. Even better – the more satisfied clients and 5-star ratings you rack up, the more you can raise your hourly rate. While no experience is needed to get started, the more experience you gain on the platform – the more money you can make. With sites like TaskRabbit, there is nothing to hold you back except yourself!

Pro: You Can Offer Multiple Services

If you are the type of person who likes no day to be the same, you will really enjoy the variety of services you can offer on TaskRabbit. Whether you want to offer one type of task or many, it’s very likely that you won’t have a boring day on the job as you will meet a variety of people and have many different experiences. (Who knew you could make $20/hour to stand in line?) It also consolidates many tasks and services into 1 place instead of you needing to sign up and search on 5 different sites to make money. So keep in mind, while you could always deliver for DoorDash or rent out your car with HyreCar, being able to offer a variety of services with TaskRabbit means you have a wider audience you can reach.

Con: Competition Can Be Fierce

Depending on what niche you choose to offer your services in, you may find yourself competing with 200 other college students nearby hoping to provide IKEA furniture delivery or install a flat screen TV. In order to stand out, spread out your services across a wide variety of niches and look for ones that don’t have as much coverage. If the market is saturated for your particular task category, you aren’t as likely to get picked above other Taskers. However, if you can provide people with excellent service and consistently rack up 5-star job reviews, this positive feedback can help you get more work. As with any small business, you just need to find a way to stand out from among the rest.

Con: Additional Expenses & Taxes

If this is your first venture into the world of self-employment, you may be in for a rude awakening. Unlike a 9-to-5 job, there are other costs to take into consideration when you work as a Tasker. You will have to factor in the additional factors of gas, vehicle wear and tear, regular vehicle maintenance, and any tools required for the job. In addition, you will have to figure out your own taxes and set aside money from each job for tax season. If you aren’t great with money management, you could get hit with a big surprise bill to the government. There is also the TaskRabbit fee of 15% per task to contend with, which really adds up over time. These hidden expenses can take quite a bit from your profits. Be sure to account for these factors when setting your hourly rates.

Final Thoughts: Should You Be A Tasker For TaskRabbit?

If you’ve ever wondered if there was a way to get rich by charging your buddies and neighbors for running their errands and helping them with household jobs, TaskRabbit may be a perfect fit for you. While you won’t make bank without putting in the work, top Taskers can easily make upwards of $60/hour. Not bad for a “side hustle”.
